The 80/20 Rule

Enjoying all foods is one part of healthy living. The secret to balanced healthy eating lies in both what and how much of we eat. The good news is that we don't need to eat healthy 100% of the time. The truth is that all foods can fit into a balanced diet.

The 80/20 Rule suggests that 80% of the time people choose a variety of nutrient-rich foods from each of the four foods groups outlined in Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating. The remaining 20% of the time less nutrient dense foods (i.e. those that supply lots of calories but very little nutrients), can be enjoyed. This translates to enjoying foods from the "other food group" a couple of times per week.
