Did you know?
- Avocados ripen best at a steady 21°C (70°F). Our state of the art ripening room is constantly monitored to ensure no deviations from this temperature.
- The ripening process takes 72 hours and once it starts it cannot be stopped or interrupted; this is why our ripening rooms operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
- Avocados ripen from the inside out. The inner flesh is ready to eat first with the outer flesh ripening last; this is why it is critical the ripening process be carefully monitored at all times.
- Perfectly ripe avocados are best stored at room temperature. A refrigerated avocado can turn to inedible mush in under a day.
- Thrifty Foods customers consume more than 40,000 perfectly ripened avocados every week. As little as ten years ago only about 1,100 avocados were eaten a week. It goes to show when perfectly ripened, everyone loves an avocado.
- Avocados are in fact a fruit and not a vegetable.
- Alligator Pear is another name for avocados because of its pear like shape and green textured skin.
