Gluten Free

More and more people are filling their cupboards with gluten-free foods. It is not surprising considering approximately 1 in 133 Canadians are affected by celiac disease, an autoimmune disease in which those affected must adhere to a strict gluten-free diet. Furthermore, people who are allergic or intolerant to gluten are also filling their baskets with gluten-free foods.

Did you know?

"wheat-free" does not mean gluten-free

The treatment for celiac disease requires eating a well-balanced gluten-free diet. Aside from avoiding gluten sources such as wheat, barley, rye and most oats, there are many healthy foods that are naturally gluten-free. These include plain meats, fish, poultry, eggs, milk, legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and grain alternatives, as well as flours made from rice, corn, soy and potato.

When first diagnosed with a gluten allergy, selecting the right food is a challenge. Good news - there are lots of options in our stores that are safe to eat.
