Thrifty Foods & Sobeys Sustainability Report

November 2009

Our parent company, Sobeys, has released its first annual Sustainability report, publicly setting out for the first time measurable goals on how they intend to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our day-to-day business activities.

The report is focused primarily on the impact of company-wide operations on the environment, and Thrifty Foods is featured prominently throughout - especially for our moves over this past year to discontinue plastic grocery bags; the work being done by our Mill Bay location Green Team; and the work being done within our retail location operations to cut down on energy consumption in conjunction with the BC PowerSmart program.

This is an important - and long-awaited - report that will set a new standard for Canada's retail grocery industry. I'm proud to see Thrifty Foods play such an important part in its content and development.

I encourage you to click on the link included below, browse through the Sobeys Sustainability site and read the report itself.

I am pleased to share with you Sobeys Inc.'s first annual sustainability report, Sustainability@Sobeys.

The direction, commitments and progress outlined in this document reflect Sobeys goal to integrate sustainability into our day-to-day business activities. Sustainability in our company is not an initiative that is separate from our core strategy, but rather a deliberate and thoughtful process that balances the needs of our business with what we must do to address the environmental and social impacts across the country.

Our approach to sustainability - which will continue to evolve - is a key component in our journey to be widely recognized as the best food retailer in Canada. We know that delivering on our sustainability targets will require investments of time, people resources, and capital. We will assess these investments with the same diligence with which we make all of our business decisions and I expect that many, if not all, will yield efficiencies and cost savings to our business over time.

As you will see in this report, we have made good progress in setting measurable goals and we are committed to building upon existing initiatives through the implementation of our formal long-term sustainability strategy and by demonstrating continuous improvement year-over-year.
